Okay, im a real noob here. Ive read the FAQ but... not a lot has gone in.
Who is actually working? Can i see this on the graph?
I have interest in setting myself up.
Could someone maybe post a list of stuff ill need, and approx price of items. Money isnt really a problem for me, but an est cost is.
And im pretty sure i wont have line of sight. Will it work through, say, the tip of a mountain?
Anything..

1. you MUST have direct line of sight. If you dont and a mountian is in the way, you will have to either wait till someone else sets up between you and the nearest node, or look at setting yourself up a second router and antenna. 2. you will need; either; an old 486($50-$200), a pcmia adapter card ($100) and a wireless pcmia card (anywhere between $130-$400) and an antenna ($30-$200). plus software, i recomend some sort of linux distro, but i am still looking at these trying to find a good one that works and noob's can setup with ease. You could look at stiking the wireless cards in your exisiting pc but i dont recomend it due to security issues etc.. You could also jusr purchase an access point instead of using an old 486, but these cost around $600 usually...so if you already have an old 486 you can use your halfway there, there a links around for building your own antennas, but i have seen a few notices from people selling them for around 30 buks also.. and last but not least, read read read read read... if your new your going to spend the next few weeks, reading and becoming acustom to all the different subjects and whats going on and how it all works. Noone will just tell you because its to complex, but once you have read alot of the stuff, it becomes quite simple, especially if you have played around with a lan at home already. good luck and save some buks up, it's all good. (this is the web of the future)

okay Looks like ill have to wait for other accesspoints to startup around me, but its pretty hilly out here... so not much chance i suppose. Ive got two or three old pc's sitting around gathering dust, so i guess i could try them out. Why is the wireless access point os soo hard to setup? Isnt it just a routing issue? Anything..

yes its just routing, but its a bit of a new thing, especially if you want to go with IPv6...thats a very new thing.
you could always try a really really really taaaalllll pole and mount ya antenna on that....if your out in a country area you wont have to many problems with council regulations.
i dont know about outer areas but inner brisbane rules are,
10 meters from the ground, or 3 meters from roof top.
can you build a mount tall enough to go over the tip of the mountian where you are???
than you will have to look at distance and boosters and stuff if its to far away..
